| Eligibility Questions: Who is eligible to apply to the CES Fellowship Program? To be eligible for this award, applicants must fulfill four criteria. First, the CES Fellowship is intended to fund students’ first major research project in Europe. Students who have already engaged in extensive field work and study in Europe, related to their dissertation, are not eligible. Second, applicants must be in the exploratory, early stage of their research. Third, applicants are expected to have finished at least a majority of their doctoral coursework. Fourth, applicants must be currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a university that is a member of the Council’s academic consortium. A list of the Council’s member institutions can be found on the CES website, www.councilforeuropeanstudies.org. Should you submit an application and your institution is not a member, we will contact the appropriate office your institution regarding membership. Do the fellowships have citizenship requirements? In 2008, CES will open some fellowships to students from around the world and therefore, encourages international students to apply. A few of the CES fellowships, funded by specific foundations, will continue to require that its Fellows are U.S. citizens. If a student’s topic has not yet been accepted or if the student has or has not taken their qualifying exams, is that student eligible? The fellowship is intended for students’ first major research projects in Europe. Qualified applicants are expected to have completed the majority of their coursework in order for them to be adequately prepared for such a research project; however, this is a fellowship for preliminary research and applicants are not required to have passed particular examinations. Applicants may have begun exploratory research for their dissertation, but dissertation does not need to have been formally approved. In order to be eligible, do students need to have received an invitation from or have a formal affiliation with a university or research center in Europe? This is not a prerequisite. Nevertheless, if you have such an invitation or affiliation, please note it in your application. What types of research qualify for CES fellowships? The Fellowship Committee takes a broad interpretation of European Studies, setting no specific parameters regarding period or discipline. Applicants of all disciplines pursuing research relevant to European Studies are encouraged to apply. European Studies include both continental and non-continental Europe (and also includes studies that place European topics in global contexts or consider transcontinental projects). Applicants from the past have pursued doctorates in a range of fields from art history to political science to anthropology. What level of language competency is required? This is conditional upon the nature of the research proposal. If the applicant is a native English speaker traveling to Ireland, then proof of foreign language competency is not necessary, but if the applicant is a native English speaker conducting research in Zagreb, then he/she should be able to conduct their research effectively in Serbo-Croatian. If the applicant falls into the latter category, at least one recommendation must attest to the applicant’s lingual abilities. No language competency evaluation form is required. Application Questions: Are notes or a bibliography included in the 2000 word limit? Yes. All footnotes, endnotes and bibliographical material are included in the 2000 word limit. Please note that as this is a narrative statement, CES prefers that applicants submit a very short bibliography or notes or none at all. Is February 1st the mailing or receipt deadline? All application materials must be received electronically by the Council no later than February 1st. Applications via post or by hand are not accepted. Can recommenders submit their recommendations on paper? Every part of your application, including recommendations, must be submitted to CES by email (ces@columbia.edu). CES will not accept any materials received by other means. How can applicants learn the status of their applications? CES will not field requests for the status of individual applications. All applicants who have submitted applications by the February 1st deadline will receive confirmation of that their application is complete on March 1st. If you have submitted an application and do not receive a notification on that date, please contact CES at ces@columbia.edu. When will applicants be notified of the results of their applications? CES will notify applicants of the Committee’s decision by May 1, 2008. Funding will be made available immediately upon acceptance of the award. Miscellaneous Questions: What constitutes ‘outside funding?’ How much other funding can be used in conjunction with the CES award? Other grants/scholarships/aid that is awarded for the same purpose as the CES fellowship (to fund the student’s pre-dissertation research trip in Europe) will be deducted from the CES award. CES will adjust their award accordingly to these situations. Assistantships are viewed as a form of earned income rather than aid and will not be deducted. Financial aid received for school/coursework is also not taken into consideration. What do winners of the fellowship receive? Fellowship sponsors three components: a) $4,000 covering a two-month stay abroad, during which time fellows have the opportunity to pursue original archival and field research; b) Fellows’ travel and accommodation at the CES International Conference, where they present their findings and receive feedback from senior scholars; c) Publication of fellows’ research reports in the CES journal, the European Studies Forum (as well as electronically). Must Fellowship funds be spent within a certain time period? Fellowship funding must cover a research period of at least two consecutive months, and must be used before September 1, 2009. Are Fellowship winners required to attend the CES Conference? Attendance is not a requirement. Nevertheless, we believe participation in the Conference to be an essential component of the program and a very beneficial experience, and therefore encourage all Fellows to attend. |
